PRACTICE: THE JOURNAL

Look at your actual schedule, not your dream schedule, and identify where and how often you have approximately thirty minutes to yourself. Is it on Tuesday and Thursday mornings? Every evening around seven?

Once you’ve identified the days and times, put a journal and pen where you are most likely to be at that time of day. Is it the kitchen counter? Your bedside? The physical presence of the journal can remind you that there are pages to fill.

Open to the first page, or the nearest blank page, and cover the page in scribble. Yes, I’m talking toddler-style scribbling. I always start my journals with something that isn’t pretty to go ahead and break myself out of the mindset that this is a place for only pretty thoughts. My journal is a place for expression. Honesty. Raw beauty. Sometimes it’s pretty, but most of the time it isn’t. My handwriting is all over the place. Sometimes I write in all caps, and sometimes I write in cursive. It’s not consistent, and for the purpose of my journal, there is nothing wrong with that. Set the tone with imperfection. It only gets better from here.

If you can’t quite bring yourself to scribble on the first page, another option is to go in the opposite direction and use a pattern by writing the same phrase over and over. The phrase can be something as simple as “My name is ______ and this is my journal,” or “I’m not sure how I’ll use this journal yet.” The point of this exercise is to free yourself from a legalistic approach to filling this journal. Do what you need to do to feel your way into the journey. Allow your hand to brush against the paper. Find a pen you enjoy using. The more you write, the more you will discover what works for you and what doesn’t, and in the beginning, a lot of it is in the mechanics.

When you’re ready to write, start with the basics. Start with statements like the following:
